The Election Commission of Pakistan has issued a formal notification regarding the vacancy of a total of 135 local government seats in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These seats have fallen vacant due to the death, resignation or non-submission of nomination papers by local government representatives.
According to the ECP, 65 local government members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have left their posts, while 64 people have died. In addition, nomination papers have not been submitted for 6 seats, due to which those seats have also been declared vacant. These seats are for village and neighbourhood councillors.
9 seats each in Peshawar and Nowshera, 2, 2, 2 in Swabi, Charsadda and Khyber, 4 in Mardan, 2, 2, 2 in Hangu, Orakzai and Kurram, 5 in Kohat, 3 in Lakki Marwat, 1 in North Waziristan, the highest number of 34 in Dera Ismail Khan and 3 in Tank.
Similarly, 5 seats each in Abbottabad and Upper Waziristan, 1 in Lower Waziristan, 17 in Haripur, 8 in Mansehra, 1 in Battagram, 5 in Swat, 3 seats each in Shangla and Upper Dir, 2 in Lower Dir, 1 in Malakand and 5 in Bajaur are vacant.
The Election Commission has announced that by-elections will be held on all these seats as soon as possible so that the local government system can be kept active and stable.
