189 people killed as a result of unrest in Kurram

PESHAWAR: At least 189 people have been killed in various incidents of unrest in Kurram since an attack on a passenger convoy heading to Parachinar four months ago. However, following efforts by the provincial government, a peace agreement has been reached to normalise the situation in Kurram, raising hopes for improvement in the area.

A detailed briefing on the implementation status of the provincial government’s decisions for lasting peace in Kurram district was provided during the 24th meeting of the provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur.

The briefing revealed that nine convoys consisting of 718 vehicles have been dispatched to deliver essential supplies to the area, and currently, there is no shortage of food items in Kurram.

Acting on the Chief Minister’s special instructions, the provincial government has initiated a helicopter service for Kurram. So far, 153 flights using two government helicopters have transported approximately 4,000 people.

Additionally, 19,000 kilograms of medicines have been delivered to Kurram to address the shortage of essential medications.

The cabinet noted that the demolition of bunkers in Kurram is ongoing, with 151 bunkers already removed.

The deadline for demolishing all bunkers in the area has been set for March 23.

In line with the cabinet’s decision, a special security force is being established for the safety of Kurram Road.

Work is underway to set up both temporary and permanent security posts, with a total of 120 posts planned for Kurram Road.

The government statement said approval has also been granted to recruit 407 personnel for deployment at these security posts, who will receive necessary equipment valued at Rs 764 million. Furthermore, the cabinet

reviewed an estimate of Rs 480 million for the restoration of the damaged Bagan Bazaar in Kurram.
