50% of Pakistanis below Poverty Line, economy on brink of collapse: Senator Humayun blasts govt

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Humayun Mohmand has launched a scathing criticism of the federal government over what he called a devastating economic collapse, claiming that nearly half the country’s population has now fallen below the poverty line. He warned that without urgent reforms and a change in leadership, the situation will continue to deteriorate, pushing the nation further into economic despair.

Speaking to reporters, Senator Mohmand expressed grave concern over the state of the economy, calling it “deeply alarming” and a result of the government’s persistent policy failures. He stated that 50% of Pakistan’s population is now living below the poverty threshold, and that inflation and declining purchasing power have left the middle and lower classes struggling for survival.

He illustrated the collapse in consumer purchasing power by pointing out that an individual earning Rs 100,000 a month today has the effective purchasing power of just Rs 42,000, due to inflation and currency devaluation. “People’s incomes remain stagnant while the cost of living continues to surge. This is unsustainable,” he remarked.

The senator further claimed that unemployment in Pakistan has soared to 22%, with both the industrial and agricultural sectors experiencing negative growth—a combination he described as catastrophic for a country dependent on these sectors for employment and GDP support.

Mohmand drew attention to the agricultural crisis in particular, stating that farmers have suffered losses totalling Rs 4.2 trillion, a blow that has severely destabilized rural economies and food security. “The backbone of our economy is being crushed,” he said, blaming inefficient policies, mismanagement, and neglect from the current government.

He also lambasted the government’s handling of economic priorities, asserting that it has failed to provide relief to ordinary citizens, who are now facing mounting pressure from rising utility bills, job losses, and food insecurity. “The government’s focus appears to be elsewhere while people are lining up for basic necessities,” he added.

Calling for immediate action, the PTI senator emphasised that only structural reforms and a leadership change can restore economic stability. “This regime has lost credibility and public trust. Unless those responsible for this crisis are removed from power, there is no hope for economic recovery,” Mohmand warned.

He concluded by urging all political stakeholders, civil society, and the business community to acknowledge the severity of the crisis and push for a national consensus on urgent economic reforms. “Time is running out, and the cost of inaction will be borne by generations to come,” he said
