BAJAUR: The Solar-powered street lights in the busy Khar Bazaar of the Bajaur district have been non-functional for the last several years, causing significant challenges for the local residents.
According to residents, the street lights in Khar Bazaar, the main bazaar of Bajaur, have been inoperative for several years, leading to significant challenges for residents. This situation has not only affected daily life but has also contributed to an increase in theft and other crimes in the area, alongside a noticeable decline in commercial activities.
Local sources report that many of the street lights are either completely broken or have had their batteries stolen. As evening falls, the market plunges into darkness, creating difficulties for passers-by, buyers, and shopkeepers alike. Shopkeepers have expressed concerns that the lack of lighting has led to a decrease in customer traffic, resulting in financial losses for the business community.
Residents are also voicing their frustrations, noting that the malfunctioning street lights have emboldened thieves. Recently, several shops were targeted, resulting in the theft of mobile phones worth lakhs. This incident, along with various other crimes, has heightened community concern.
These street lights were installed in 2012 as part of a development project. However, they have not received any maintenance, and relevant institutions have failed to take practical steps for their restoration.

Wajid Ali Shah, President of Bajaur Khar Bazaar, has stated that multiple applications have been submitted to authorities, but so far, there has been little progress. Recently, special meetings were held with the Deputy Commissioner of Bajaur, who has assured that new lights would be installed soon.
Residents are urging the district administration, TMA, and other concerned institutions to take immediate action to restore the street lights in Khar Bazaar. This restoration is crucial to alleviating the problems faced by residents and revitalising the charm of the market.
