US CENTCOM Chief praises Pakistan as key counter-terrorism partner

US Central Command (CENTCOM) Chief General Michael Eric Kurilla has acknowledged Pakistan as a vital partner in the global war on terror, emphasising its significant role in countering threats posed by ISIS-Khorasan.

Speaking before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, General Kurilla highlighted Pakistan’s close intelligence cooperation, which has led to the killing and arrest of dozens of ISIS-K terrorists, including five of the group’s most wanted leaders. He noted that Pakistani authorities have made critical intelligence contributions, facilitating key operations for the United States.

Among these achievements, General Corella credited Pakistan with the arrest and extradition of Jafar, the mastermind behind the Abbeygate bombing, an operation personally communicated by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.

He further stated that Pakistan continues to effectively counter ISIS-K through strategic intelligence sharing, despite over 1,000 terrorist attacks in the western regions of the country since early 2024, resulting in 700 fatalities and 2,500 injuries.

While acknowledging that ISIS-K’s activities have declined in recent months due to heavy losses, General Corella stressed the importance of sustaining relations with both Pakistan and India, asserting that engagement with one should not preclude engagement with the other.
