NEW YORK: Iran has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations over the recent Israeli airstrikes, condemning the attacks through an official letter submitted to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council.
The Iranian government described the strikes as a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law, and called on the UN Security Council to urgently convene an emergency session to address what it termed a serious breach of international norms.
In the letter, Iran’s permanent mission to the UN emphasised that the Islamic Republic views the attacks as cowardly and unlawful acts of aggression. It stated that Iran reserves the right to respond in a decisive, proportionate, and effective manner, adding that the time and place of this response will be determined solely by Iranian authorities.
Tehran reaffirmed that the defence of its territorial integrity, national security, and its citizens is a fundamental and non-negotiable right. The letter also warned that the Israeli government, referred to as the “Zionist regime,” would be forced to pay a heavy price for what Iran described as a strategic miscalculation.
The Iranian government confirmed that several senior military officials and prominent nuclear scientists were killed in the Israeli airstrikes, which have intensified in recent days. Among those martyred were Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces; Major General Hossein Salami, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); Commander Gholam Ali Rashid; Dr. Fereydoon Abbasi, former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran; and Dr. Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, a key nuclear expert.
The loss of such high-ranking military and scientific figures represents one of the most significant blows to Iran’s leadership in recent memory and marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv. Iranian authorities have vowed to retaliate, and many analysts fear the situation could spiral into broader regional conflict.
Meanwhile, political response within Iran has also intensified. Both the Senate and the National Assembly passed a unanimous resolution condemning Israel’s attacks and expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.
The international community continues to watch the unfolding crisis with concern, as calls grow for restraint on both sides to prevent further escalation in an already volatile region.
