SWAT: Flash floods in River Swat claimed the lives of two tourists, while 10 others, including women and children, remain missing in dangerous conditions near the Swat River.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, five dead bodies were recovered from the Maniyar area of Swat after the river suddenly increased due to continuous rainfall. In the nearby Fiza Ghat region, multiple families are reported to be trapped on riverbanks and small islands formed by rising water levels.
A surviving tourist, Adnan resident of Sialkot, told media persons that the family was having breakfast by the riverside when the sudden flood struck, leaving them with no time to escape. “In addition to our family, three other people were also swept away by the river,” he said.
Adnan further confirmed that the deceased included four women and six children. Rescue operations continue as authorities work to locate any missing individuals and prevent further loss of life.
Adnan said that the missing persons in the river include two of his sons and two of his nephews, along with their mother and brother are among them.
Emergency response teams, including Rescue 1122 and local volunteers, have launched full-scale rescue operations using boats, life-saving equipment. Efforts are ongoing to safely evacuate all stranded individuals to higher ground. The district administration has issued an urgent advisory for residents living near the banks of the Swat River to evacuate immediately and move to safe zones. With forecasts of continued rainfall, the risk of further flooding remains high.
“We are closely monitoring the situation. All relevant agencies are on high alert to respond to any emergency,” said a spokesperson for the district government. Authorities have also urged tourists and locals to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and mountainous areas prone to landslides and flash floods. The rescue teams have recovered two dead bodies near Manyar area while search for other drowned family members are underway.
Local correspondent said that 80 other persons are also missing in various parts of the district as authorities have sent rescue teams to search for the entrapped people in the Swat river.
