Magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolts parts of Pakistan

5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Punjab, KP

ISLAMABAD: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), but no casualties or property damage have been reported so far.

The tremor follows a series of recent seismic activities in Karachi, where residents experienced multiple aftershocks over several consecutive days, causing widespread panic. Locals said the intensity and frequency of the tremors were unlike anything they had witnessed before.

Though the earlier quakes did not result in major destruction, the repeated shocks reportedly weakened the structure of the Karachi Central Jail. As a result, inmates panicked and managed to escape by breaking through damaged prison walls. While hundreds of prisoners fled, many voluntarily returned, and others were rearrested by the police.

Authorities have increased monitoring in the region and urged citizens to remain cautious.
