Peshawar High Court takes notice of Indus Highway poor condition

PHC Orders Authorities to Stop Harassing Afghan POR Cardholders

PESHAWAR:  The Peshawar High Court, while taking notice of the poor condition of the Indus High, expressed strong displeasure over the lack of developmental work on this vital road project, which poses a serious risk to public safety.

During the proceedings, the Chief Justice inquired sternly from the concerned officials, stating, “Precious lives are being lost on the Indus Highway. When was the last time any of you personally travelled on this road?” He added that there appears to be no safety mechanism in place for travellers, and the highway remains dangerously neglected.

An official from the National Highway Authority (NHA) informed the court that he had travelled on the highway just a day earlier. In response, the Chief Justice asked, “Do you honestly believe the Indus Highway is safe and suitable for travel?” The court directed the officials to present details about the work done so far on the highway. Chief Justice remarked, “I am 57 years old, and I have yet to see the Indus Highway fully completed. When exactly will this road be finished?”

He further stated that commuters face constant hardships, including security concerns and the absence of basic infrastructure. “This highway has turned into a lawless stretch where everyone drives as they please—it’s become a jungle,” the Chief Justice remarked sharply. The NHA official attempted to defend the department, saying that construction work is currently ongoing. However, the Chief Justice demanded video evidence, instructing the official to show visual proof of any real progress on the ground.

Advocate General requested a short extension, promising that officials would come prepared and submit a detailed report by tomorrow. The Chief Justice agreed but reiterated that administrative negligence has already cost many lives. The court has summoned senior officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA), the Pakhtunkhwa Highways Authority (PKHA), and other relevant departments to appear before the bench at the next hearing.
