Anti-encroachment drive underway in flood-prone villages near the river Kabul in Nowshera

NOWSHERA: Given potential flood risks during the monsoon season, a comprehensive anti-encroachment and drainage clearance operation is currently underway in villages situated along the banks of the River Kabul in Nowshera district. The campaign, led by the district administration, aims to prevent loss of life and property due to possible flooding and heavy rainfall.

The operation is being carried out under the direct supervision of local authorities to ensure that timely and effective measures are implemented ahead of any emergency. Teams have been deployed to remove illegal structures built on or near seasonal drains, which often become the primary cause of urban flooding during monsoons.

Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Zar Alam Khan visited the operation site to inspect the ongoing efforts. Speaking to the media, he said, “We are taking preventive action to protect residents from potential disasters. The removal of encroachments and cleaning of drainage channels is essential to avoid major accidents during the upcoming rainy season.”

He emphasised that the government is committed to safeguarding human lives and ensuring the safety of public infrastructure. Zar Alam Khan also appealed to residents to cooperate fully with the administration in its clean-up and anti-encroachment campaign.

“This is a matter of public safety. I urge the community to voluntarily remove encroachments from drainage areas and assist municipal teams in the cleaning operation. Only through collective responsibility can we reduce the risk of flood-related damage,” the MPA added.

Local officials confirmed that heavy machinery is being used to remove debris, garbage, and unauthorised structures obstructing the natural flow of rainwater. The administration is also working with disaster management authorities to assess vulnerable points and ensure proper drainage systems are in place before the peak monsoon season begins.

Environmental experts have long warned that unchecked construction along riverbanks and seasonal waterways increases flood risks and hampers emergency response efforts. The ongoing drive in Nowshera is part of a broader initiative by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to improve disaster preparedness across flood-prone districts.

The district administration has reiterated its resolve to continue the operation until all critical drainage points are cleared and encroachments removed, ensuring a safer environment for local communities.
