Federal cabinet approves import of 500,000 Tons of sugar to stabilise market prices

Sugar prices hit record high deaspite surplus stock

ISLAMABAD: To curb rising sugar prices and ensure price stability in the domestic market, the federal cabinet has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar.

The Ministry of National Food Security confirmed that the import process will be carried out through government channels and that all necessary logistical and administrative arrangements have already been finalised.

According to the Ministry, this decision marks a proactive step by the government to maintain a steady supply of sugar and avoid any market disruptions. “Immediate implementation of the plan is now underway,” the Ministry stated, adding that this strategy is rooted in long-term planning and economic prudence.

Officials further said that the current approach differs significantly from past practices, which were often marred by allegations of mismanagement and artificial shortages. “Unlike previous governments that relied heavily on subsidies after creating artificial scarcities, this government has adopted a more transparent and forward-looking strategy,” the Ministry noted.

The statement added that when domestic sugar production was in surplus, the current government allowed for sugar exports in a controlled manner to benefit local producers. Now, in response to emerging supply gaps and fluctuating prices, the decision has been taken to import sugar to stabilise the market and protect consumers.

“This is a well-thought-out intervention that reflects responsible governance and an understanding of market dynamics,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry. “The goal is to ensure that sugar remains affordable for the average citizen without putting unnecessary pressure on the national exchequer.”

Economists have generally welcomed the decision, noting that timely imports could prevent price spikes and reduce hoarding tendencies in the market. The Ministry has assured the public that there will be full transparency throughout the import process, with strict oversight to prevent misuse or profiteering.
