KP reserved seat members seek ECP help for oath, cite speaker delay

KP assembly condemns Israeli aggression, passes resolution on Palestine and Iran

PESHAWAR : Members elected on reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KP Assembly have formally requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to intervene so they can take their oaths of office.

In a letter, the members stated that despite being notified by the ECP following the decision on reserved seats, and despite the Peshawar High Court (PHC) ordering their oath-taking in a July 8th, 2025 ruling, the Assembly Speaker failed to call a meeting for this purpose on July 9th, 2025, as anticipated.

The letter emphasizes the urgency, pointing out that under the Constitution of Pakistan, members cannot vote until they have taken the oath. It further cites Article 255(2) of the Constitution, which states that if it is not possible to take the oath before the appointed person (the Speaker), the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court has the authority to nominate another person to administer the oath.

Consequently, the members have requested the ECP to direct the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court to nominate a representative to administer the oath to them, arguing that the Speaker has shown no seriousness in fulfilling this duty.
