Galiyat water rights: KP demands payment from Punjab after 77 years

British-Era Water Dispute: KP Wants Compensation from Punjab

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly Standing Committee on Culture, Tourism, Antiquities, and Museums held a crucial meeting today to discuss the unresolved issue of water rights from Galiyat to Murree.

Chaired by MPA Sharafat Ali, the committee highlighted that water from Galiyat has been supplied to Punjab since the British era without any compensation to KP. Sharafat Ali stated that the local residents of Galiyat should have the first right to this water, followed by other regions.

The committee proposed that if water, Sui gas, or any other natural resources are extracted from Galiyat, the local community must benefit first. Sharafat Ali revealed that if calculated at just one rupee per liter, Punjab owes KP Rs 880 million annually for the water supplied over the past 77 years.

The panel recommended taking the matter to the federal government, the Supreme Court, or the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to secure KP’s financial rights. Attendees, including MPAs Rajab Ali Abbasi, Munir Hussain Laghmani, and others, emphasized using all legal and constitutional measures to protect the province’s resources.

The meeting concluded with a firm resolve to pursue justice for KP’s rightful claims over its natural assets.
