PUTA urges PM to save University of Peshawar from financial collapse

Peshawar University facing worse financial crisis

PESHAWAR The Peshawar University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) has urgently appealed to the Prime Minister of Pakistan to intervene and prevent the imminent collapse of the University of Peshawar, one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious public universities.

In a letter addressed to the PM, PUTA highlighted the severe financial crisis crippling the institution, including unpaid June 2025 salaries for employees and the near-paralysis of academic and research activities. The association warned that chronic underfunding threatens the university’s survival, risking the education of thousands of students.

PUTA acknowledged the federal government’s fiscal challenges but emphasized the strategic importance of sustaining higher education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The association requested an immediate allocation of Rs. 10 billion to the university’s Endowment Fund to ensure long-term financial stability and reduce reliance on emergency bailouts.

The letter praised the PM’s commitment to education and infrastructure, expressing hope for swift action to save the 75-year-old institution. Failure to act, PUTA cautioned, would undermine regional educational equity and national progress.

Stakeholders, including students and faculty, await the government’s response as the university teeters on the edge of operational collapse.
