government school results disappointing

PESHAWAR: Despite tall claims of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KP) government regarding bringing reforms in education, the matriculation results of government schools have proven to be extremely disappointing, as a large number of students failed in their annual exams.

According to documents, 739 students from only 29 government schools affiliated to the Peshawar Board appeared for the matriculation exams, out of which only 151 students were declared successful, while the remaining 588 failed. Students of various schools in Chitral, Peshawar, Mohmand, Khyber and Charsadda failed miserably. The results of government schools in Chitral, Mohmand, Khyber, Charsadda and Peshawar remained alarmingly poor.

All the students of Government Higher Secondary School, Buri, Chitral, were declared failed, and none of the seven students of Government Middle School, Begisht, Chitral, could pass. Similarly18 out of 18 students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Haryana Payan, Peshawar were failed.

The failure rate in schools in Daman Afghani, Rajar Charsadda, and Haji Banda Peshawar also ranged from 80 to 100%. The main reason for students’ failure is said to be the parent-teacher coordination.

Education experts have called these results a “failure of the education system” and have demanded immediate corrective measures from the provincial government and the education department. They say that if this situation continues, the future of the next generations is at risk.

Education experts, teachers’ organisations and parents are now demanding that the government not only conduct a detailed review of the results but also initiate an independent research on the causes of this educational decline and initiate a process of immediate reforms.
