Ceasefire extended as Bajaur peace negotiations continue

BAJAUR: The local Peace Jirga in Bajaur has set a 6 pm deadline today to finalize negotiations between security forces and outlawed TTP militants. All parties have agreed to maintain a ceasefire during the talks.

The Jirga stated it is working hard to establish lasting peace and prevent violence. If successful, the agreement will be shared with the public. Former MNA Gul Zafer expressed hope for a positive outcome, praising the elders’ efforts.

Tensions rose in late July when TTP militants appeared in Bajaur’s Mamund tehsil, prompting security forces to launch an operation. Locals protested, calling it a risk to civilians. In response, a 50-member Jirga was formed on August 1, including tribal elders and elected leaders, to negotiate with both sides.

So far, two rounds of talks have been held in a positive atmosphere. A third round is now underway. Local journalist Bilal Yasir told Pakhtun Digital that initial discussions with militants were productive.

The situation remains tense as the deadline approaches.
