Bangladesh to hold general elections in February 2026

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced in a national address that general elections will be held in February 2026, following demands from political parties.

Yunus confirmed he would step down before the polls and formally propose the schedule to the Chief Election Commissioner. “We will ensure peaceful, fair elections and transfer power to the elected government,” he said, urging citizens to support the transition.

The polls, initially expected by April 2026, were rescheduled after consultations with stakeholders.
