MUMBAI: A controversial AI-edited version of the 2013 hit film Raanjhanaa has sparked outrage after its re-release with a modified finale. Lead actor Dhanush and director Aanand L. Rai strongly criticized the unauthorized changes, calling them a threat to artistic integrity.
The original Tamil romantic drama, starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, was recently re-released with its climax scene altered using artificial intelligence. Dhanush took to social media to express his dismay, stating, “This is not the film I was part of 12 years ago. Tampering with art through AI sets a dangerous precedent.” He demanded stricter laws to protect films from such modifications.
Director Aanand L. Rai joined the condemnation, revealing that neither he nor the creative team was consulted about the AI edits. “It’s irresponsible and unethical to alter an artist’s work without consent,” he said.
The controversy has ignited debates about AI’s role in film restoration and the need for legal safeguards in the entertainment industry.
