Bajaur peace talks collapse over deadlock

The local Peace Jirga in Bajaur has set a 6 pm deadline today to finalize negotiations between security forces and outlawed TTP militants. All parties have agreed to maintain a ceasefire during the talks.

BAJAUR: The latest round of peace talks between tribal elders, security forces, and the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has ended in failure due to unresolved disagreements.

A tribal Jirga, comprising Jamiat-e-Islami leaders, former MNA Gulzafer Khan (PTI), MPA Dr. Hameed, and Malik Khalid, confirmed that the sixth round of negotiations collapsed after both sides reached a deadlock on key issues.

The Jirga urged the TTP and security forces to show restraint and resolve disputes through dialogue, warning that military operations would only worsen public suffering.

The peace efforts began after security forces imposed a curfew and announced an operation in 16 villages of Mamund Tehsil on August 1. Local residents protested, claiming civilians were trapped and being used as human shields by militants. Following appeals from tribal leaders, security forces paused the operation to allow talks.

After seven rounds of discussions, the Jirga declared the talks unsuccessful, citing unresolved disputes. The situation remains tense as locals fear renewed clashes.
