PTI founder nominated Achakzai as opposition leader

ISLAMABAD: The founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the slot of opposition leader in the National Assembly.

This development has come at a time when the current opposition leader Omar Ayub has been removed from his post after being convicted of 10 years’ imprisonment in May 09 related cases.

According to party sources, the PTI founder informed the leaders who came to meet at Adiala Jail about this decision. He said that Mahmood Khan Achakzai is now the most suitable candidate to represent the opposition.

On the other hand, a formal notification has also been issued by the National Assembly Secretariat regarding the vacancy of the post of opposition leader, after which the way for a new nomination has been paved. Talking to media persons, Omar Ayub said that he was exposing the facts of corruption and that was the reason that the ruling party wants to de-seat him as a leader of the opposition.

On 31 July 2025, Ayub and 195 others were convicted by a court in Faisalabad and sentenced to up to 10 years’ imprisonment over the 2023 Pakistani protests. On August,05 2025, the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified him due to his conviction in terrorism cases.

Omar Ayub played a leading role in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) following Imran Khan’s removal from office. Ayub was given a high slot 2024 Pakistani elections, in which he served as the PTI-Independents candidate for prime minister, campaign head and Secretary-General.

Omar Ayub participated by holding press conferences and taking a party leadership role alongside Gohar Ali Khan.
