PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has submitted an amendment to the provincial assembly aimed at implementing stricter punishments for drug offences in educational institutions.

The proposed amendment seeks to revise the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Control of Narcotics Substances Act, introducing severe penalties for drug dealing, purchasing, selling, and smuggling in schools and universities.

According to the draft law, individuals found in possession of more than four kilograms of heroin will face life imprisonment. If the amount exceeds six kilograms, the penalty could be either life imprisonment or the death penalty. Similarly, possession of more than five kilograms of cocaine would also incur life imprisonment or the death penalty.

The amendment further outlines specific penalties for various recreational drugs. For instance, exporting between ten to twenty kilograms of recreational drugs could result in a fourteen-year prison sentence. The maximum penalty for exporting over twenty kilograms of such drugs is life imprisonment, along with a fine of two hundred thousand rupees.

The law also specifies penalties for the export of other substances, including poppy, hashish, hashish oil, and opium.

This amendment bill has been drafted to strengthen the crackdown on drug-related activities in the province, aiming to prevent drug use and trafficking within educational institutions.
