Thirty-four Colombian soldiers have been kidnapped by an armed group in the southeast of the country, according to the Defense Ministry.
The ministry confirmed the incident occurred in a remote and dangerous region that has recently seen a surge in activity from illegal armed groups. The soldiers were on a routine patrol when they were ambushed and taken hostage.
While initial evidence suggests a rebel group is responsible, officials stated the investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact perpetrators.
In response, Colombian security forces have launched a massive search operation across the affected area. The government has also appealed to international organizations for support and cooperation to secure the safe release of the kidnapped troops.
