Corruption behind flood damage, says defence minister Khawaja Asif

flood damage

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has attributed the destruction of bridges and roads during the recent floods to corruption, stating that this corruption has become ingrained in our social culture.

In an interview with a private TV channel, he revealed that only 15 to 20 per cent of the budget allocated for government development projects is actually spent on the intended work, while the remainder is lost to corrupt practices. He noted that all parties involved in the construction process—including planners, contractors, and construction companies—are primarily focused on their financial interests, which results in unstable and substandard projects.

Khawaja Asif compared the current infrastructure to bridges built during British rule, which are still standing and durable, exemplifying quality and honesty. He expressed regret over the diminishing value placed on earning a halal livelihood, emphasizing that the pursuit of wealth has overshadowed principles of honesty.

The Defence Minister underscored the need for effective accountability and genuine investment of government funds in public welfare. He warned that without these measures, the cycle of infrastructure destruction and subsequent losses will persist. According to him, this approach invites not only financial risks but also increases susceptibility to natural disasters.
