What is a cusec? How many litres in one cusec of water?

$3 million in emergency assistance

Cusec is actually an abbreviation for the word cubic feet per second, meaning that a cusec refers to the flow of water per unit of time, not the total amount of water.

A cube or cubic feet contains approximately 28.32 litres of water, so if one cubic foot or more than 28 liters of water passes through a place in one second, that amount of water will be one cusec.

Just as kilograms are used for weight, kilometres for distance, and marlas for area, the unit used to measure the flow of liquids, especially rivers and canals, is called a ‘cusec’.

So when it is said that a 100,000 cusecs of water will pass through a certain place, it means that 283,170 liters of water will pass through there in one second. Multiply the amount of water with 28.32, which would be measured as a total of litres of water passed through the area in one second.

According to this calculation, 566,340 litres of water released by India into the Ravi River, which is currently causing widespread destruction in Punjab.
