Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has announced an extension for electricity bills and special relief measures for consumers in flood-affected areas. He emphasised that the government stands with the people during these difficult times and will provide immediate assistance to electricity consumers impacted by the floods.
According to the Energy Minister, the payment period for electricity bills for flood victims will be relaxed, allowing affected families some relief in their household expenses. He also noted that electricity is currently being supplied to about 18 million consumers across the country with a 70 per cent discount. Many people have reduced their electricity consumption to less than 200 units by installing solar panels, which has made their electricity costs more affordable.
Owais Leghari further explained that under the net metering system, several consumers are supplying the electricity they generate back to the National Grid, which is expected to benefit them financially in the future. However, he warned that net metering could impose an additional burden of approximately Rs 4 per unit on the public as a whole.
This government announcement is being described as a significant support for flood-affected families, as it will not only alleviate their financial pressure but also help them continue the process of restoring their homes more effectively.
