Aleema Khan’s son remanded in Jinnah House attack case

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Saturday sent Shahrez Khan, nephew of PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, to jail on judicial remand in the Jinnah House attack case linked to the May 9 riots.

Judge Manzer Ali Gill presided over the hearing and rejected the police’s request for an extension in physical remand after Shahrez was produced in court at the end of his eight-day custody. Instead, the court ordered that he be shifted to jail under judicial remand.

Shahrez, the son of Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, was arrested on August 21 in connection with the Jinnah House incident. His brother, Shershah, is also an accused in the same case, making both siblings part of one of the most significant investigations into the May 9 unrest.

The May 9 violence erupted across Pakistan in 2023 after the arrest of PTI’s founder in a corruption case. The protests quickly turned violent, with attacks on state and military installations, and the ransacking of Lahore’s Jinnah House becoming one of the most high-profile events of that day.

During Saturday’s proceedings, police investigators requested more time in physical custody to continue their probe against Shahrez, but the judge declined and ordered his transfer to jail.

Speaking to the media during an earlier hearing, Aleema Khan claimed her son had been taken into custody shortly after Imran Khan secured bail in multiple cases. She added that both of her sons, Shahrez and Shershah, now face allegations of participating in anti-state activity and the May 9 violence.
