PESHAWAR: Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced major reforms in the education sector, including the launch of a semester-based system for schools across the province’s summer and winter zones.
The new structure, beginning from nursery to grade 8, will divide the academic year into two terms — fall and spring.
In summer-zone schools, the academic year will start on September 1, with the fall semester running until December 31, followed by the spring semester from January 16 to May 31. In winter-zone schools, the session will begin on March 1, with the spring term ending June 30 and the fall term running from August 1 to December 22.
Each term will conclude with examinations, with both results carrying equal weight in the final assessment. To ease students’ workload, the syllabus may be split into two parts in line with the semester format.
While the existing vacation schedule will largely continue, slight adjustments may be introduced. Holidays will also be utilized for student enrollment drives, free textbook distribution, teacher training, and seasonal camps aimed at boosting extracurricular and technical skills.
Officials stressed that maintaining separate calendars for summer and winter zones was essential due to varying weather conditions. They added that the semester system would help improve academic performance, ensure better use of resources, and provide students with more opportunities for personal and skill development.
