Intense protests have erupted in Indonesia against recent increases to parliamentary salaries and benefits. Demonstrators surrounded the parliament building in Jakarta, setting parts of it on fire. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds, resulting in clashes that left five people dead. Reports indicate several protesters were injured, some with broken bones, after jumping from the burning building. Authorities have deployed the army to control the tense situation.
In response to the unrest, President Prabowo Subianto announced a reduction in lawmakers’ privileges and a withdrawal of some parliamentary policies. He also canceled a planned visit to China for the SCO meeting and apologized to the Chinese president. Despite these concessions, major student organizations are continuing their call for protests.
