The Afghan state news agency Bakhtar News and other local news channels have said that at least 250 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in the earthquake that struck last night.
The news channel Tolo reported, citing the US Geological Survey, that the epicenter of the earthquake that struck different countries on the night between Sunday and Monday was in the Kunar province.
Officials of the Natural Disaster Management Agency say that the earthquake caused deaths and injured local people in the Kunar, Nargal, Saoke, Watapur, Mangui and Chapa Dara areas.
Authorities have expressed fears that the number of dead and injured may increase and rescue activities are still underway in different areas and people buried under the rubble are being searched.
According to the report, officials say that people are still buried under the rubble in different villages of Nargol district, about which the authorities estimate that this number may be more than 100.
The residents of these areas have appealed to the residents of other areas to come and help them.
According to the report, relief teams from the Ministries of Defense, Interior and Health have reached the areas and the injured are being airlifted to a hospital in Nangarhar.
Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement issued after the earthquake that all resources were being used to save people.
At around 12:30 am, severe tremors of an earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale were felt in the country, with aftershocks , while after some time, tremors of 4.7 magnitude were also felt.
These tremors were felt in Nangarhar and Laghman in addition to Kunar, while their range reached Kabul and even the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.
Earlier, on the night between Sunday and Monday, Pakistani officials had also reported that severe tremors of an earthquake were felt in various cities including Islamabad, including Murree, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi and other cities.
The earthquake in Islamabad lasted for about 10 seconds, due to which citizens came out of their homes and panic spread among the people.
