What is behind the growing cases of kidney failure ?

kidney failure

High blood pressure damages the kidneys in several ways as kidneys have millions of tiny blood vessels (glomeruli) that filter blood while High blood pressure puts constant pressure on these vessels, causing them to become stiff and narrow.

When the vessels are damaged, the kidneys are unable to filter the blood properly. As a result, waste products and excess salt/water build up in the body. In turn, damaged kidneys cause higher blood pressure (because they cannot properly regulate salt and water). Thus, the diseases multiply.

According to the World Health Organisation and research reports, high blood pressure is a leading cause of millions of cases of kidney failure worldwide. In some countries, about 30–40% of kidney patients suffer from this disease as a result of high blood pressure.

Patients are advised to try to keep their blood pressure around 120/80. Reduce salt intake (especially avoid packaged and fast foods). Exercise regularly and control your weight. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Get your kidney function and blood pressure tested regularly.
