Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Thursday strongly criticised the Punjab government for reportedly imposing a ban on wheat and flour supply to KP, calling it a violation of the Constitution and a threat to national unity.
Kundi stated that the “arbitrary ban,” allegedly enforced on August 31, 2025, breaches Article 151 of the Constitution, which guarantees free trade between provinces. He said the move has caused the price of a 20kg flour bag to spike to around Rs 1,200 in Punjab and as high as Rs 2,800 in KP, exacerbating the burden on already inflation-hit families.
“The people of KP are being subjected to discrimination,” Kundi said in a post on X. “I urge Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to not only condemn but also immediately revoke this verbal ban.”
While Kundi had earlier voiced concerns over the issue, Punjab officials denied the existence of any formal ban on inter-provincial wheat movement.
The KP governor also urged the provincial PTI-led government to allocate wheat quotas to local flour mills to help stabilise prices and ensure food security is not undermined by “provincial barriers.”
Meanwhile, the KP Assembly unanimously passed a resolution condemning Punjab’s reported restrictions, citing a 68% rise in flour prices across the province.
