KAMALYA: Finance Minister and Senator Mohammad Aurangzeb said on Sunday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared a climate and agricultural emergency, with the government fully committed to rehabilitating flood-affected communities.
Speaking to the media during a visit to Kamalia, the minister said damage assessment surveys were in progress, with a special committee formed to evaluate farmers’ losses. “The most critical issue right now is providing immediate relief to those affected,” he emphasized.
Aurangzeb noted that the emergency was declared in coordination with the federal cabinet, assuring that all necessary steps would be taken without delay. He praised the armed forces, Rescue 1122, and district administrations for their swift and effective flood response, which helped minimize loss of life in Toba Tek Singh, Kamalia, and Pirmahal.
The minister stressed that the government was now moving from emergency relief to rehabilitation, highlighting that both the Prime Minister and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz were personally visiting flood-hit areas to oversee operations. He confirmed extensive damage to roads, bridges, homes, and agricultural land, and revealed that the PM has directed the preparation of a comprehensive 300-day action plan to deal with future disasters.
Aurangzeb said floodwaters had begun to recede in several areas, allowing relief operations to accelerate.
