ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced the licensing of VPN service providers under a class license category for data services.
In a press release, PTA confirmed the approval of two companies for Class Licenses to offer VPN services.
VPNs allow users to access restricted or blocked content. In Pakistan, many people use VPNs to access platforms like X and other restricted websites.
A class license lets multiple users operate under the same conditions without needing individual approvals. As of December 2024, PTA resumed issuing Class Licenses for Data Services for VPN providers. Companies offering VPN services must obtain this license to operate legally.
This initiative ensures businesses can use VPNs securely while complying with regulations. It also promotes transparency in the industry.
PTA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting businesses in meeting their connectivity needs responsibly.
In December 2024, PTA introduced a new strategy to register VPNs after previous compliance efforts failed. Initially, the telecom regulator considered banning VPNs but later reversed the decision.
