KP Governor urges PM Shehbaz to rename Islamabad airport after Benazir Bhutto

PESHAWAR: Faisal Karim Kundi, the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has formally urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to rename Islamabad International Airport as “Benazir Bhutto International Airport.” In a letter addressed to the government, Kundi emphasized the need to honor the sacrifices and contributions of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, by naming the airport after her.

Kundi highlighted that in 2008, following Benazir Bhutto’s tragic assassination in 2007, the government had renamed Islamabad Airport as “Benazir Bhutto International Airport.” However, in 2018, the Aviation Division issued a notification to name the newly constructed airport as “New Islamabad International Airport,” removing the earlier dedication.

In his letter, Kundi pointed out that several airports worldwide are named after prominent leaders, such as Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, and Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. He argued that Benazir Bhutto’s legacy and services to the nation deserve similar recognition. The Governor stressed that renaming the airport would serve as a fitting tribute to her enduring contributions and sacrifices for Pakistan.
