Lakki Marwat farmers sit-in protest against canal water shortage

Lakki Marwat protest

Lakki Marwat: For the past 12 days, thousands of farmers and residents in  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KP Lakki  Marwat district have protested against severe water shortages in the Marwat Canal, exacerbated by reduced rainfall due to climate change. T

he canal, fed by Baran Dam, faces a crisis as the dam’s 100,000 cusecs storage capacity remains underutilized. Protesters, led by the Marwat Betani Qaumi Tehreek, demand water diversion from Kurram Garhi Headworks to save crops.

However, Kurram River’s current flow of 400 cusecs is insufficient to meet Bannu’s allocated 1,550 cusecs, let alone supply the canal.

Negotiations between protest leaders, including Aman Jirga chief Hidayatullah Khan Isakhel, and district authorities have yet to yield a resolution.

Inamullah Khan Khwaidadkhel of the Tehreek insists water flow must be restored before vehicle supplies resume.\
