ISLAMABAD: The upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan experienced heavy snowfall and rain lashed across the region severely disrupting daily life in the area.

Passengers travelling to and from Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad were stuck on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) on Wednesday as heavy rains caused landslides that blocked the main road at several points in Kohistan.

According to Diamer police, the KKH was blocked at two different locations between Dasu and Diamer, leaving passengers stranded on both sides. However, efforts to reopen the road are ongoing.

“The Bhasha to Raikot section has been opened, which was also blocked last night due to a landslide, but rain continues to affect the area. The road is currently blocked in the Lotar area of Upper Kohistan,” a spokesperson for Diamer police reported.

In Shangla, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Fawad Khan issued an advisory to travellers, cautioning them to avoid travelling on the Bisham-Swat road due to heavy snowfall, which had caused a portion of the road to collapse. A vegetable supplier’s vehicle was involved in an accident, injuring the driver.

Chitral, Swat, and Dir Upper correspondents reported that their districts received heavy snowfall on Wednesday causing a blockade of main and link roads leading to disruption of daily life in the area.

According to a Chitral reporter, the Lowari Tunnel has received 14 inches of snow so far as snowfall continues in Upper Chitral, with several villages covered in the white blanket of snow

Snowfall continues in Shandur Top, Boni, Mastoj, Torkho, Morkho and other areas.

Torkhoro road was closed to traffic due to an avalanche at the location of Dhori Dan and Boni has received 6 inches of snow so far

Numerous areas, including Swat, Dir Upper, Chitral, Shangla, Mansehra, Battagram, Kohistan, and Abbottabad, experienced heavy snowfall. Almost all districts in Gilgit-Baltistan, including Hunza, Skardu, and Ghizar, were also blanketed in snow as the snowfall persisted for the third consecutive day, further lowering temperatures in the region.
