PESHAWAR: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is set to meet in Peshawar today, Friday, February 28, to determine the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan. The meeting, scheduled for 6:30 pm, will be chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, the committee’s chairman, following the Asr prayer. However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has indicated that the chances of sighting the Ramadan moon are slim due to prevailing cloudy weather conditions.
According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, zonal committees across the country will also gather separately to evaluate moon sighting reports. The central session in Peshawar will see the participation of religious scholars representing various schools of thought.

The PMD has forecast partly cloudy skies across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, over the next 24 hours. “The likelihood of sighting the Ramadan moon is low due to the overcast conditions,” the department stated. Additionally, the Met Office highlighted that at sunset, the moon’s age would be approximately 12 hours, with a moon-sun angular separation of about five degrees—factors that could further impede visibility.

The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s decision will ultimately determine whether Ramadan will begin on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the moon sighting. Muslims across the country await the announcement with bated breath as they prepare to embark on the holy month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
