Malakand University dismisses lecturer over sexual harassment of student

LOWER DIR: A university lecturer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Malakand district has been dismissed over sexual harassment of female students.

As per details, the Malakand University syndicate meeting held today (Saturday) and decided to terminate the services of the lecturer Abdul Haseeb.

On February 4, a student from the Urdu Department filed a first information report (FIR) at Malakand’s Pull Chowki police station that lecturer Abdul Haseeb attended to kidnap her.

The very next day, the university suspended him and referred the matter to the Anti-Harassment Committee.

After reviewing the case, the Anti-Harassment Committee recommended dismissal. Based on committee findings, the university syndicate terminated him from service.

Police have registered an FIR against lecturer Abdul Haseeb under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The charges include 354 (assault to outrage a woman’s modesty), 365B (kidnapping to compel marriage), and 506 (criminal intimidation). The FIR also cites 452 (house trespass with intent to harm) and 511 (attempt to commit an offense punishable by life imprisonment or lesser terms).

The complainant accused the lecturer of entering her home, forcibly holding her hand, and trying to drag her away in front of her family. She stated that he threatened her with dire consequences if she refused to marry him.

In the FIR, she alleged that the lecturer had been stalking and harassing her for months. She claimed to have reported his behavior multiple times to the university management.

The Anti-Harassment Committee held a meeting and personally heard the victim’s statement. The committee will submit its report with recommendations to the university syndicate for further action.

A university spokesperson reiterated that Malakand University has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. He assured that the institution is committed to a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation.

Separately, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s Secretariat has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the allegations. The committee includes Additional Secretary Administration Asif Rahim and City Police Officer Sonia Shamroz.

According to an official notification, the committee will visit the university, gather facts, and record statements from all parties involved. It may seek assistance from any person or organization. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Police Officer (DPO) Lower Dir will provide administrative support.
