PHC suspends gas tariff hike for industrial consumers

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court PHC suspended the notification of increase in gas tariff for industrial consumers.

A hearing was held in the Peshawar High Court on a petition against the increase in gas tariff for industrial consumers. The hearing was conducted by a two-judge bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmed and Justice Sabitullah.

The court suspended the notification of increase in gas tariff and ordered industrial consumers to pay at the old rates.

The petitioner’s lawyer said that the application was filed by Lucky Cement and Cherat Cement, along with other industries. On January 26, 2025, OGRA increased the price of gas from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 per MMBTU. OGRA proposed a rate of Rs 1,772 for industrial consumers, but the federation increased the price.

The petitioner’s lawyer said that industries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are being discriminated against, that industries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are on the verge of collapse due to the additional tariffs, and that under Article 158 of the Constitution, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should also get gas at the same level as other provinces. In November, the Peshawar High Court had suspended a similar increase.

The court suspended the notification of the increase in gas tariffs and sought a response from the parties.
