Pakistan braces for heavy rainfall from tomorrow: PMDA

Rain triggers power outage in Peshawar

ISLAMABAD: A fresh weather system is expected to bring rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall across the country starting tomorrow, March 9, 2025.

According to the latest advisory from the Met Office, a westerly wave will usher in cooler and more refreshing weather, particularly in northern and hilly areas, providing relief during the holy month.

The system is expected to intensify next week, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall to cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Mianwali. This shift will lower temperatures, especially during dawn and dusk, making fasting hours more comfortable.

Under this system, showers and snowfall are forecasted in regions such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Battagram, Buner, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Urban centres like Islamabad and Lahore will also experience rainfall between March 12 and 16, offering a welcome respite from the usual pre-Ramazan heat.

The cooler temperatures are expected to reduce the impact of heat during peak Ramazan hours.

However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has cautioned against potential landslides and avalanches in mountainous areas, advising travellers to avoid unnecessary movement, particularly from March 13 to 16.

Authorities have urged farmers to adjust their schedules according to the forecast and advised all relevant departments to stay vigilant as the weather system develops.
