KHYBER: The Torkham border between Pakistan and Afghanistan remains closed for the 19th consecutive day, as efforts to resolve the ongoing dispute continue. A second meeting of the Jirga, aimed at addressing the issue, is scheduled to take place on the Afghanistan side of the Torkham border.
The Afghan Jirga recently held discussions with high-ranking officials in Kabul to address the border closure and its impact on trade and travel. During the meeting, the Jirga highlighted the challenges faced by both sides and conveyed the stance of the Pakistani Jirga. Key demands from Pakistan include halting construction work in disputed areas, implementing a ceasefire, establishing a “peace gate,” and reopening the border.
The Pakistani Jirga has emphasized the importance of peace, stating that stability will lead to increased trade and improved relations. The Afghan Jirga, after two days of consultations, has agreed to hold the second session of talks on the Torkham border, likely on the Afghan side.
