Crackdown on illegal Fish farms proposed in KP

PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly’s Standing Committee on Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperatives has stressed the need for a strong monitoring system to regulate fishing and ensure transparency in contract awards.

The committee, chaired by MPA Sher Ali Afridi, met to discuss illegal fishing and unauthorized fish farming in the province. Members, including Arbab Muhammad Usman Khan, Ikram Ullah Ghazi, Malik Adeel Iqbal, and Abdul Mumin, called for stricter laws to curb these activities.

The panel urged authorities to develop a clear strategy for regulating fishing operations and reviewing existing contracts where necessary. It also sought a detailed report on the fishing situation in Tarbela and Khanpur Dams for further discussion in the next session.

Additionally, the committee directed the Fisheries Department to provide data on postings and transfers from the last five years for review in the upcoming meeting.

The move comes amid growing concerns over illegal practices harming the province’s fisheries sector.
