ISLAMABAD: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a loan package of $350 million for Pakistan, aimed at supporting women’s financial inclusion and enhancing their ability to participate in the country’s economy.
This funding is part of the second phase of the Women Inclusive Finance Sector Development Program, which seeks to provide women across Pakistan with better access to financial resources such as loans, savings accounts, and other banking services. The goal is to help women start and grow their own businesses, earn incomes, and become financially independent.
Of the total loan amount, $300 million is designated as a policy-based loan to support reforms within Pakistan’s financial sector. These reforms are intended to create a more inclusive environment for women by encouraging banks and financial institutions to lend to them, removing legal or regulatory barriers that limit their access to credit, and supporting training programs to improve women’s understanding and use of financial services.
The remaining $50 million will be directed toward specific projects that directly increase women’s financial participation. This includes developing financial products tailored to women’s needs, partnering with microfinance institutions and banks to reach underserved communities, and supporting digital platforms that allow women to access financial services from their homes or remote areas.
ADB has highlighted that this loan is a significant step toward promoting gender equality and economic development in Pakistan. Empowering women to take an active role in the economy not only improves their own and their families’ well-being but also contributes to the nation’s overall productivity and inclusive growth. The support aligns with Pakistan’s broader development goals of reducing poverty and helping marginalized groups, especially women in rural and low-income areas.
In essence, this financial assistance goes beyond simply providing funds; it aims to build a more inclusive economy in Pakistan where women have the tools, support, and opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully.
