Amir Muqam denies plans to withdraw FATA merger or abolish 18th amendment

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON Engineer Amir Muqam chaired a meeting to discuss the restoration of the jirga system in the merged districts (formerly FATA) and other issues. A high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam on the restoration of the jirga system in the merged districts (formerly FATA) and other issues. An introductory meeting of the committee established by the Prime Minister was held in Islamabad. The meeting was attended by Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Advisor to the Chief Minister on Information Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, Secretary Kashmir Affairs Zafar Hassan, Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah, Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed, former Chief Secretary Shakeel Durrani, high officials, provincial ministers, advisors and secretaries. On this occasion, Engineer Amir Muqam, while considering the promotion of an effective alternative justice system in the tribal districts, said that tribal elders and legal experts will be included in the consultation, and the jirga system will be harmonised with the constitutional and judicial structure. The Federal Minister said that suggestions will also be presented for the development and peace and order of the merged districts, and suggestions will be formulated in consultation with them for the development of the tribal people.
On this occasion, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal said that it is necessary to reduce dependence on the police and provide justice at the grassroots level. He said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is a key partner in this process, and we are committed to moving forward together.

In the meeting, the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa paid tribute to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Federal Minister Amir Muqam and said that the elected representatives of the merged districts and tribal elders should be included in this process. The Chief Secretary said that the tribal society has historically been based on the jirga system. It was also agreed in the meeting to form a subcommittee; the next meeting will be held in Peshawar.
