Sources said a senior government official of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and two senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have come under investigation by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a mega corruption scandal of Rs 40 billion. An informed source in the federal capital told the national newspaper “The News” that two suspicious transactions worth millions of rupees were made from the government accounts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which are related to senior leaders of PTI. One of these transactions was made in a bank account that is allegedly linked to the family of a top government official of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Sources said that NAB has revealed in its initial investigation that two expensive properties were purchased with stolen government funds. One of these properties was purchased from a PTI leader from Hazara region, while the other property was purchased in a major city in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, for which the money was paid from a suspicious bank account. According to reports, the said second property is currently occupied by the family of a key constitutional public official of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa belonging to PTI. Both these major financial transactions were made from bank accounts into which money stolen from the government funds of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was allegedly transferred.
Sources said that NAB is investigating all aspects of this mega corruption scandal, which has dealt a severe political blow to the previous PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. When contacted, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said, “This matter is from the caretaker government’s era. Whatever the political affiliation, the law will take its course.” Investigations into the scandal are ongoing, and more revelations are expected to emerge in the coming days.
