Breakthrough in KP Senate polls as PTI, Opposition agrees on 5/6 Seat Formula

KP Government and Opposition Agree on 6/5 Formula for Senate Elections

PESHAWAR: A breakthrough was achieved between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and opposition members to elect their senator unopposed from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly as the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the opposition agreed on a 5/6 formula.

Under this formula, PTI will be given 6 seats while the opposition will be given 5 seats.  An important meeting of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s political committee was held in which the names proposed by founding chairman Imran Khan for Senate candidates were formally approved. The meeting also ratified the old names of the political and parliamentary committees.

The names approved by PTI for general Senate seats include Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Muhammad Afridi and Pir Noor-ul-Haq Qadri. Rubina Naz will be the candidate for the reserved seat for women, while Azam Khan Swati will be the candidate for the technocrat seat. In addition, Mashal Yousafzai has been nominated as a candidate for the vacant seat of Senator Sania Nishtar.

According to the PTI political committee, the party’s disgruntled Senate candidates have decided to withdraw their nomination papers. Local sources said that two important meetings were held between the dissident candidates and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Friday, but the political committee retained the final decision.

With this development, it is expected that the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be held unopposed, which is being considered an important step towards political stability in the province.
