In a historic and unanimous decision, the California State Senate passed a resolution formally recognizing the significant contributions of the Pakistani-American community to the state’s economy, society, and culture.
The resolution was introduced by Senator Melissa Hurtado, who notably wore Pakistani attire and henna for the occasion. Senator Hurtado, the youngest woman elected to the state Senate and Chair of the Agriculture Committee, praised the community’s story of “sacrifice, dignity, and perseverance.”
The resolution highlights the long-standing U.S.-Pakistan partnership, built on shared democratic values, and specifically acknowledges the vital role Pakistani-Americans have played in developing California into a global economic powerhouse.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the U.S., Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, was present for the vote and welcomed in the chamber. He thanked Senator Hurtado and called the resolution’s passage on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day a reflection of the strong people-to-people bonds between the two nations.
The move is seen as a major appreciation of the diaspora’s efforts in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting cultural understanding.
