Chairman senate Gilani honors workers, stresses rights on labour day

ISLAMABAD:Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani marked International Labour Day by hailing workers as the “backbone of Pakistan’s progress” and urging stronger protections for their rights. He emphasized that sustainable development is impossible without ensuring laborers’ social, economic, and legal security, including fair wages, safe workplaces, and access to education and healthcare.

Gilani praised the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) legacy, recalling Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto’s revolutionary policies for workers, such as landmark legislation and welfare programs. He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to advancing pro-worker laws, stating, “No child of a laborer should abandon dreams due to poverty.”

Calling for an “integrated system” to guarantee fair compensation and dignity, Gilani urged collective action to uplift workers and make them “active partners in national development.”
