China could target Brahmaputra if India disrupts Indus waters treaty: Jalil Abbas Jilani

Former Pakistani Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani has stated that India is unlikely to “act foolishly” by launching an attack on Pakistan given the current geopolitical climate. Speaking to private Tv channel, Jilani drew parallels between the recent Pahalgam incident and a 2000 massacre of Sikhs in Indian-administered Kashmir, which occurred during then-U.S. President Bill Clinton’s visit to India. Sikh groups had accused India’s intelligence agency, RAW, of orchestrating the violence.

Jilani noted that the timing of the recent Pahalgam attack — coinciding with a visit by the U.S. Vice President to India — raises questions about its planning. He emphasized the significant roles of China and the U.S. in shaping regional dynamics.

On water disputes, Jilani warned that if India attempts to halt water flow to Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty, China could retaliate by raising issues over the Brahmaputra River. He asserted that India cannot unilaterally suspend the treaty and accused it of repeatedly violating international agreements.
