LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the ‘Chief Minister Punjab Transplant Programme’, calling it the most extensive transplant initiative in the Pakistan’s history.
For the first time, five major organ transplants—liver, kidney, bone marrow, cornea, and cochlear implants—will be provided free of cost to deserving patients, ensuring access to critical medical procedures.
Through this programme, residents of Punjab in need of transplants can undergo surgeries funded by the government. Cochlear implants will be provided to children born with hearing impairments, enabling them to experience a normal life. Similarly, corneal transplants will help restore vision for those affected by blindness.
Eligible patients can register with the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority (PHOTA) to access these services.
Transplants will be performed at both government and selected private hospitals. To assist the public, the Punjab government has also launched a toll-free helpline: 09009 0800 for information and registration.
Speaking about the initiative, CM Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public welfare.
She emphasised that organ transplants are complex and costly procedures, often beyond the financial reach of most people. “The state acknowledges its responsibility towards every citizen, and we are committed to fulfilling it,” she said.
She further underscored that the government will bear all expenses related to liver and kidney transplants, ensuring that patients receive life-saving treatments without financial strain.
